Two days ago was the release date of our box set Summer On Main Street, a six-book set of small town romances. It came out with a bang and it’s still selling well. I am so proud to be a part of this group of authors and I’m pleased to have another of the fabulous author-MJ Fredrick-on my blog today.
Welcome MJ. Tell us about yourself.
I have been writing seriously for 18 years, when I joined RWA. I first published in 2008, with two different publishers, two weeks apart, both firefighter books. I’ve written 25 books now, from romantic suspense to contemporary romance, set from Antarctica to Texas to Africa. I have been teaching for 26 years now, every grade level but kindergarten. I’m currently teaching music, which means ALL the kids are my kids! I’ve been married for 28 years to an Emmy-award winning producer, and we have a 24-year-old son who has gone into writing himself, as a journalist.

When did you first start writing? I FIRST started writing when I was about 9. I wrote a Grease knock-off, a high school romance. I remember writing it in the back seat of the car on a vacation to California. After that, I wrote a story about a rodeo cowboy, and each chapter was in a different town, with a different girl. It was very sexy, considering I was in middle school.

What inspired your latest story? My husband and I went to Padre Island a couple of Octobers ago. I am a sponge when it comes to ideas, and I started thinking about the people who live in a seaside town, what they do for a living, what they do for fun. I had my notebook and had figured out the basic ideas for the first three books, but I had other obligations. The ideas sat in my notebook for two years before I finally got to tell their stories in The Love I Want to Be In.

What is your typical writing day like? Since I’m still teaching, I get up early, write between two-to-six pages before school, go to work, come home, nap, and then work on promo and editing and covers and such in the evenings. I am very strict with my daily goals, so I’m pretty productive even during the school year. I will say, though, I’m REALLY looking forward to summer vacation so I can write full-time!

What do you like to do besides write? I love to do crafts I find on Pinterest, sew, shop for antiques, and go on road trips with my husband. We try to go a couple of new places every month.

If you weren’t a writer, what would you want to do? I’d be a librarian
Best vacation ever: The Grand Canyon with my husband and son about fifteen years ago. Most relaxing vacation ever.
